At the All Kids College Ready 2007 Conference, sponsored by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and held in Seattle, Washington, July 16-18, Bridget Long gave a talk titled “Streamlining the Aid Process: Improving College Readiness & Access,” in which she discussed the Financial Aid Intervention supplementary study.
On September 5, 2007, Thomas Bailey and and Katherine Hughes presented preliminary findings on dual enrollment in and outlined a dual enrollment research proposal to practitioners, policymakers, and researchers from across the state. Held in and hosted by the James Irvine Foundation.
On September 24, 2007, Mark Schneider, Commissioner of the for Education Statistics (NCES), met with NCPR researchers to discuss ongoing research and to consider what survey questions would be most advantageous to add to existing NCES instruments, such as the HSLS and BPS, for answering research questions about developmental education and dual enrollment. On September 26, 2007, Sue Scrivener presented findings on the Kingsborough Community College (KCC) Opening Doors study at a webinar organized by the U.S. Department of Labor with over 250 participants. Regina Peruggi (KCC president) spoke about how KCC was using MDRC’s research to bolster and expand their learning communities. More Information.
On October 1, 2007, Sue Scrivener presented the findings on the KCC Opening Doors study to a group of reporters at the Hechinger Institute on Education and the Media’s Community College Fellowship Seminar in New York City.
On October 4, 2007, Mary Visher presented findings on the KCC Opening Doors study at the Strengthening Student Success Conference (San Jose, CA) to an audience of practitioners and administrators, accompanied by a group of KCC administrators, who spoke about implementing learning communities.
At the 2007 Double the Numbers Conference, sponsored by Jobs for the Future and held in Washington DC, October 4-5, Bridget Long gave a panel presentation titled "Streamlining the Aid Process: Improving College Readiness & Access," in which she discussed the Financial Aid Intervention study. Also at the Double the Numbers Conference, Katherine Hughes participated in a panel that debated the relative benefits of AP course taking versus dual enrollment, and examined the evidence base for each.
On October 19, 2007, Thomas Bailey gave the keynote address at the annual Two-Year College Showcase, a conference co-sponsored by The College Board and the New England College Council and held in . In his talk, titled “Promoting Student Success in Community Colleges,” Bailey discussed policies to promote achievement among students with weak academic skills.
At Peking University in Beijing on October 31, 2007, and at the East China Normal University in Shanghai on November 2, Thomas Bailey gave a presentation titled “Community Colleges and Their Role in Higher Education in the United States” to audiences of students, professors, and administrators. Bailey discussed increasing access and promoting success among disadvantaged students.
On November 13, 2007, Thomas Bailey gave a seminar presentation titled “Developmental Education in Community Colleges” at the Higher Education Collaborative Seminar Series held at the of at Urbana-Champaign.
On January 4, 2008, Eric Bettinger gave a presentation titled "Racial Gaps in College Preparation: Exploring the Role of Postsecondary Remediation Using a Regression-Discontinuity Approach." It was part of the session, "Racial and Ethnic Gaps in Education: Theory, Policies, and Practice," given at the American Economic Association (AEA) Annual Meeting.
In February 2008 at the Achieving the Dream conference held in Atlanta, Mary Visher discussed the Learning Communities Demonstration and how it grew out of the Opening Doors Learning Communities Study.
On April 7, 2008, Katherine Hughes presented in the panel "Expanding Access to Dual Enrollment: Research Findings and Institutional Practice" at the 88th Annual AACC Convention in Philadelphia. More Information.
On April 25, 2008, Elisabeth Barnett offered a presentation entitled "Dual Credit: the National Picture." She provided an overview of the current state of research on dual credit and associated policy implications to college presidents and trustees at a meeting of the Michigan Association of Community Colleges at Montcalm Community College in Sidney, Michigan.
From June 10-12, 2008, at the 2008 Annual IES Research Conference held in Washington, DC, NCPR staff presented two poster sessions: 1) “The Impact of Postsecondary Remediation Using a Regression Discontinuity Approach: Addressing Endogenous Sorting and Compliance” and 2) “Learning Communities Demonstration.” In addition to the posters, there was a panel presentation “Improving Access to and Completion of Postsecondary Education” by Juan Carlos Calcagno. In July 2008, Robert Ivry briefed the Washington State Board of Technical and Community Colleges about MDRC’s research on learning communities, including the Learning Communities Demonstration and Opening Doors.
On July 22, 2008, Lashawn Richburg-Hayes (MDRC Senior Research Associate) presented “A Good Start & Paying for Persistence: Building Knowledge to Improve Education” at the 2008 Summer Academy of the Institute for Higher Education Policy conference in Birmingham, Alabama. The presentation focused on the Learning Communities Demonstration and the findings at Kingsborough Community College. Download the PDF.
On September 26, 2008, Sue Scrivener and Kate Gualtieri (MDRC Research Associate) gave a talk at the National Center for Developmental Education’s 4th International Conference on Research in Access and Developmental Education. The talk, titled “Learning Communities: Emerging Findings on a Promising Strategy,” shared findings from the Kingsborough Community College Opening Doors study in addition to information about the Learning Communities Demonstration. On September 26, 2008, the American Youth Policy Forum and NCPR held a lunchtime forum and discussion titled “Jumpstart on College and Careers: Dual Enrollment Research, Policies, and Effective Practice.” Thomas Bailey presented and Katherine Hughes and Aaron Doyle (CCRC Senior Research Assistant) attended. On January 15, 2009, at the Institute for Research on Education Policy and Practice (IREPP) Stanford University, School of Education/Economics Department Research Seminar Series Bridget Terry Long presented “The Impact of Postsecondary Remediation: How can we serve the needs of Underprepared Students?” in Palo Alto, California. Discussion included findings from the Florida remediation study.
On February 6, 2009, at the second NCPR/AYPF summit in Washington, DC, Thomas Bailey, LaShawn Richburg-Hayes, and Bridget Terry Long participated as panelists in the forum titled “Financial Aid Practice That Support Low- and Moderate-Income Student Access and Success. On February 26, 2009, NCPR staff gave a presentation on Texas' Intensive Summer Programs at the National Association for Developmental Education 33rd Annual Conference, Greensboro, NC.
In March 2009, NCPR presented two sessions at League for Innovation Annual Conference 2009, titled: "Learning Communities at the Community College of Baltimore County" and “Developmental Summer Bridges: Young Texas on the Road to College”. More Information.
On April 5, 2009, at the American Association of Community Colleges Annual Convention in Phoenix, Arizona, Michelle Ware (Operations Associate at MDRC) and Rachel Singer (Director of Academic Affairs, Kingsborough Community College) led a presentation titled “Implementing Learning Communities: Lessons from MDRC’s Learning Communities Demonstration.” Download the PDF.
On April 17, 2009, Bridget Terry Long prepared presentations on two different projects for the 2009 American Educational Research Association (AERA) annual meeting in San Diego. Dr. Long gave a presentation on postsecondary remediation in Florida, titled “The Impact of Postsecondary Remediation Using a Regression Discontinuity Approach: Addressing Endogenous Sorting and Noncompliance.” In the same session, Angela Boatman (a co-author and doctoral student) gave a presentation for the Tennessee Remediation Study called “Does Remediation Work for all Students? The Impact of Remedial and Developmental Courses on Students with Different Levels of Academic Preparation.”
On April 24, 2009, Bridget Terry Long presented the results of the H&R Block project at the National Council of State Legislators (NCSL) Spring Forum in Washington, DC. On May 4, 2009, Bridget Terry Long presented the results of the H&R Block project at the University of Pennsylvania’s IES Lecture Series in Philadelphia. Her talk was titled, “The Role of Information and Simplification in College Decisions: Results from the FAFSA Experiment.”
From June 7-9, 2009, at the Annual IES Research Conference in Washington, DC, NCPR researchers presented three posters on the learning communities demonstration, the California dual enrollment project, and the Texas DSB study. More Information.
On July 22, 2009, at the National Bureau of Economic Research Summer Institute in Cambridge, MA, Bridget Terry Long presented results from the FAFSA intervention study.
On September 11, 2009, Director Thomas Bailey presented during the Hechinger Institute’s Fellows Week held at Teachers College in New York. The presentation was titled, “Community Colleges and Remediation: What’s Not Working and Why?”. On September 29, 2009, the Scientific Evidence in Education (SEE) Forums hosted an interactive discussion about the latest research on this important topic. Thomas Bailey spoke at the forum, which highlighted the newly released IES Practice Guide,“Helping Students Navigate the Path to College: What High Schools Can Do” which provides concrete recommendations, based on the best available research evidence, for high schools to help all their students prepare for and get to college. On October 2, 2009, the Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) Midwest at Learning Point Associates, invited Thomas Bailey to present the results of his research at an event titled, "Increasing Access to Higher Education," in Washington, D.C. From October 7-9, 2009, NCPR personnel attended the 2009 Strengthening Student Success conference in San Francisco. Evan Weissman presented “Promising Practices in Developmental Summer Bridges” along with Ann Hoey from Texas A&M International University and Angelina Nunez from El Paso Community College.
On November 2, 2009, in a presentation at the U.S. General Accountability Office, Boston, Bridget Terry long discussed the FAFSA intervention study and its results.

On November 7, 2009, NCPR participated at the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE) Conference 2009. Angela Boatman of Harvard University gave a presentation titled, "Does Remediation Work for All Students?: The Impact of Remedial and Developmental Courses on Students with Different Levels of Academic Preparation." On November 7, 2009, Judith Scott-Clayton and Lashawn Richburg-Hayes were discussants in a session titled, "Financial Determinants on the Demand for College," at the 2009 Fall Research Conference of the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management (APPAM). On February 21, 2010, at the Sociology of Education Association Conference in Pacific Grove, California, Heather Wathington, Claire Mitchell, and Joshua Pretlow presented “The Potential of Community College Cohorts: An Exploratory Analysis.”
On March 12, 2010, NCPR held a session at the 34th Annual National Association for Developmental Education (NADE) Conference in Columbus, Ohio. From March 12-14, 2010, NCPR co-sponsored the 2010 National Education Seminar. Thomas Bailey was a presenter in three sessions: "The Changing Role of Community Colleges," "Improving Student Success in Remedial Education," and "College Readiness: Next Steps for Advancing State Policy." From March 28-31, 2010, at the League for Innovation in the Community College conference in Baltimore, NCPR participated in two sessions. “Learning Communities Demonstration Implementation Lessons,” was led by Mary Visher, with co-presenters Donna McKusick, Community College of Baltimore County, and Rachel Singer, Kingsborough Community College. From June 24-25, 2010, NCPR participated in three sessions at the Community College of Baltimore County’s Accelerated Learning Project's (ALP) 2nd Annual Conference on Acceleration. NCPR director Thomas Bailey was a featured plenary speaker on June 24th (Download the PDF). Also on the 24th, in the session, "Evaluating Innovative Developmental Programs: Exploring Possibilties for a Demonstration Project," Thomas Bailey and Mary Visher conducted a conversation with colleges to assess interest in participation in a coordinated program of rigorous evaluation of accelerated developmental education programs (Download the PDF). On June 25th, Davis Jenkins and Nikki Edgecombe gave a presentation titled, "Multivariate Analysis of the Community College of Baltimore County’s Accelerated Learning Project (ALP)."

From October 6-8, 2010, at California’s annual Strengthening Student Success Conference in Costa Mesa, CA, Evan Weissman presented results on the learning communities at Hillsborough, Houston, and Queensborough, in a presentation entitled “Learning Communities: Rigorous Research and the Real World.” He was joined in the presentation by Donna McKusick (The Community College of Baltimore County) and Pam Huntington (Merced College). From November 4-6, 2010, at the annual Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management (APPAM) Research Conference in Boston, MA, Mary Visher and Michael Weiss presented on a panel about learning communities. Mary Visher presented the findings of the implementation study conducted during the first year of the demonstration; Michael Weiss presented the impact findings from the three colleges where results are available—Hillsborough, Queensborough, and Houston (Download the PDF). On November 18, 2010, NCPR presented a symposium at the 2010 ASHE Conference titled, "Institutional Strategies for the Postsecondary Success of Under-prepared Students: The Latest Research."
On December 3, 2010, an AYPF Forum co-sponsored by the NCPR was held in Washington, DC. The forum was titled "Examining the Role of Summer Bridge Programs in Promoting College Readiness and Completion: Lessons Learned from Texas’ Developmental Summer Bridges." More information.
